HOPELESS FAITH

“Breathing in, I taste the cold.

The winds are shifting — hope begs my grip to release it; it wishes to fly.

Hope, struggling to breathe, clawing at my fingers, says, “You hold me too tightly. You’ll kill me. Is it too difficult to let go? If you choke me, I’ll die. Plants need water to touch the sun. You need stars to walk at night. And I must be free to fly… let me go to find another that needs me.”

My grip tightens… around hope’s neck.

Relinquish my hold? I think not. Dream of flight while I live without my dream, the one you promised when you said, “It’s possible, just hang on to me.”

My grip tightens still, squeezing the life out of hope…

My grip relaxes as I feel hope give up. “Ah, now I am greater than you. I stand alone. No one could do what I do, not even you,” I say, as hope lies in my hand, still living, barely holding on to its life the way I do to a dream I’ll never have — a Rose, Purple in color, I will never see.

I feel it in my bones; hope, it remains — a weak pulse… “There now,” I say to hope. “Rest in me. I needed you, but you, you will now need me. For you created faith in longing, but I, I am shaping destiny.”

In the next lifetime, or the life after, perhaps… I will find her…

My Purple Rose.”
